The breed is recent and originated in the early 1980s, when its developer, Jeni Slater, found a litter of wild specimens and took them to her farm.

The breed eventually ended up in Norway, brought by Jane’s friend, Gloria Moldroup. There was some concern about the need to adapt to the new climate, as cats from hot climates suffer greatly from these changes. However, these specimens did not have many problems adapting. In mid-1984, the Danish specimens participated in an exhibition in Copenhagen, demonstrating the new species to the public.

Like many other endemic breeds, these cats are difficult to buy in other countries, and are mostly found in Europe. One thing you should pay attention to is the origins of the females of the cat you are purchasing. Sokokes must come with certificates of origin from Kenya from their ancestors, so that their pattern and characteristics, both physical and psychological, are preserved.

Personality

Sokokes are very active cats, which is why they should be given plenty of stimulation, whether it be with towers for them to climb or platforms for them to climb. The breed has undergone little change in its natural characteristics, and its hunting and observation instincts are very strong and should be stimulated with games, interactions and especially conversations, as the Sokoke is a talkative and affectionate cat, enjoying giving small headbutts or using them to get attention. Therefore, it is not recommended for them to live in apartments or be left alone for long periods of time.

The Sokoke is very social and has no difficulty socializing with other cats and dogs in the house, as well as other people and relatives. However, at first, it may seem apprehensive and distant, but it soon loses its apprehension and surrenders to its owners.

Features

With a muscular and athletic body, medium size, with a small head and medium to large ears, its coat is striped with an oyster formation that is very characteristic of the breed.

Its fur is short and close to the body and does not have an undercoat, but it is not uncommon for specimens to appear with some undercoat, so brushing is not necessary, but it is recommended because of the pleasant sensation for the cat.

Care

A well-suited and balanced diet should be offered, such as super premium foods with a high percentage of meat in their composition.

It is in good health and is not affected by diseases that affect most cat breeds, but annual visits to the vet for check-ups are recommended.

Their life expectancy can vary between 12 and 15 years if well cared for.

Before purchasing a Sokoke, prepare it for its arrival, especially by screening patios and balconies. Scratching posts , cat beds , litter boxes with litter or granulated cat litter , cat waterers or cat fountains , and cat towers are essential accessories for your daily life. Super premium foods are essential for maintaining your cat’s health and maintaining your body.
